Activities
Many of the activities listed below were culled from the tourist web sites for the cities and towns. The Nor'westing 2010 cruise is not engaged with any of these commercial activities. Please make your own arrangements.

Cruise Events
These are some of the events that are planned during the cruise and are included in the Per Person Fee.

Kayaking in Roche Harbor,  06 September

  • A kayaking rental facility is available at the marina.

  • Roche Harbor and adjacent Wescott Bay are great areas for exploring from the water.

  • For more information, contact San Juan Outfitters.

Butchart Gardens,  07-08 September

  • Fifty-five acres of wonderful floral display are open to the public, offering spectacular views from the many paths that meander through the four main gardens. In 1904, Jennie Butchart began to beautify a worked-out quarry site left behind from her husband's pioneering efforts in the manufacture of portland cement. The family's commitment to horticulture and hospitality spans 100 years, and continues to delight visitors from all over the world. From the exquisite Sunken Garden to the charming Rose Garden, the gracious traditions of the past are still maintained in one of the loveliest corners in the world.

  • It is easy to take the public bus to Butchart Gardens.  Bus #75 will take you all the way, without bus changes.  You can catch bus #75 just just a few blocks from our docks at Causeway Floats in Victoria.  The bus stops at the corner of Courtney and Douglas.  Look for the sign at the corner.  More information can be found at the Tourist Information Centre at 812 Wharf Street, near the rendezvous site.  The schedule changes seasonally, but several bus departures will be available at convenient times - both directions.  Details can be found on the BC Transit web site.

  • For more information on the gardens, see www.butchartgardens.com.

Cycling in Victoria,  07-08 September

  • Victoria is the known as the "Cycling Capital of Canada". A temperate climate, an extensive trail and road network and spectacular scenery allow for year-round on- and off-road biking. Bike shops, clubs and touring companies offer expertise, equipment and guided rides to both residents and visitors. All ferries that service Vancouver Island allow passengers to bring bicycles aboard for a small fee. Cycling in Victoria and on Vancouver Island is both a mode of transportation and a way of life. Visitors can explore the entire city or the entire Island via bicycle.

  • If your charter vessel isn't equipped with two wheeled transportation aids, there are several places within easy walking distance from the marina where you can rent bikes or scooters. Check out Cycle BC Rentals or Cycle Treks for details.

Whale Watching in Victoria,  07-08 September

  • Several professional tour companies leave from the Wharf Street Floats and the Causeway Floats (in front of the Empress Hotel). Both sites are within easy walking distance from our moorage.

  • The local orca pods are active in the San Juan Islands and all boaters should keep a sharp lookout for them.

    • Watch where the fast professional whale watching boats head

    • Look for groups of boats hanging together

    • The south eastern end of San Juan Island is a particularly good spot, off of Lime Kiln State Park.

Flying Tour of San Juan Island,  10 September

  • These flights are spectacular!

  • See Mt. Baker and our other mountains to the east, glimpses of the city of Victoria (where you just spent 2 nights), and maybe whales and dolphins patrolling the border we share with Canada.

  • Flights are from the Friday Harbor airport

  • The web site for one of the operators is San Juan Airlines

  • Price will be about $175 for five people for a 30 minute flight.

Bus Tour of San Juan Island,  10 September

  • Opportunity to see and learn about the significant historical sites and places of special beauty on this very special island.

  • See British Camp and American Camp and hear about the Pig War (that really didn’t happen).

  • From Lime Kiln Point you might see orca whales since they tend to hang around there in September.

  • See a lavender farm and an Alpaca farm.

  • Visit the Whale Museum at Friday Harbor

  • It fits nicely into the afternoon schedule on Friday.

  • See the web site for San Juan Transit for details.

  • Price is $17 for the two hour tour from Friday Harbor.

Scavenger Hunt on San Juan Island,  10 September

  • The Friday Harbor Power Squadron is hosting a photo scavenger hunt on Friday.

  •     Stay tuned for more details.

Group Awards Dinner on 10 September, Friday Harbor

  • We will be bused from the marina to the San Juan County Fairgrounds for the awards banquet, starting at 1800. Buses will be returning to the marina regularly during the event.
  • The meal is a plated sit-down meal featuring your choice of prime rib or broiled salmon.
  • A cash bar serving margaritas, beer, and wine, will be hosted by the Friday Harbor squadron.
  • Awards follow the banquet.

Fishing in Washington and British Columbia

  • The State of Washington requires valid fishing licenses for fishing in fresh and salt water, as well as for crabbing digging shell fish and taking any sea life (including algae). More information can be found at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/
  • Similar regulations for crabbing and fishing in salt water in British Columbia can be found at http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/
